Adriana Varejão | Studio | Frieze Masters 2024

Artist Adriana Varejão is based in Rio de Janeiro, ‘a city of enormous porosity.’ Like the city itself, her studio opens out to the world. She describes her place of making as a ‘kitchen’, as she mixes paints and influences together to create her works, drawing on local cultural traditions to subvert dominant Western visual rhetorics and the Christian narratives they tend to favour. In her most recent body of work, Varejão revisits a leitmotif of her practice: Portuguese azulejos (tiles) that adjoin Chinese, Dutch-Flemish and Moorish ceramic traditions. Varejão will be presented by Victoria Miro as part of the ’Studio’ section at Frieze Masters 2024. The section sees ten immersive presentations — focusing on artists’ place of making, reflecting the idea of the past informing the present moment of creation.
