Murrumbeena, a residential suburb, is 15 km south-east of the Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia. It was named after the north-south Mirambena Road (the suburb's western boundary), that name dating from about 1862. It is surmised that the road's name derived from an Aboriginal expression meaning belonging to you, welcome, or land of frogs, or referring to an Aboriginal member of the native police. The spelling was changed to the present name soon after the railway station opened in 1877. Murrumbeena railway station is a commuter railway station on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines, part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the south-eastern suburb of Murrumbeena, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Murrumbeena is an elevated premium station, featuring an island platform with two faces. It opened on 14 May 1879, with the current station provided in 2018 The original railway station with associated gardens is located on Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena and was presumably opened with the line on 8th of October, 1877, the present buildings and footbridge having been erected about the time of electrification in 1922. It is historically significant as a point of entry and departure for the Murrumbeena locality for over a century, having been associated with its development presumably since the opening of the line in 1877.
