Across South Africa, the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia and beyond, Zimbabweans in the diaspora are sending money home and investing in Zimbabwe — including in rural communities. In this video, we share our own story and investment journey, while discussing the growing concerns around Sabhuku land deals and the uncertainty many people may now be facing. For us, this conversation is not about defending illegal land transactions. It is about asking a bigger question: What happens to the investments that Zimbabweans have already made? Diaspora money is contributing to rural development through property, small businesses, agriculture, logistics, connectivity, cultural activities and other projects. If these investments can be properly documented, planned and regulated, they could become an important part of rural industrialisation and local economic development. We share our fears, our experience and our plans — and hope this conversation contributes to a wider discussion among communities, investors and policymakers about how these arrangements can be regularised, formalised and brought into the legal economy, rather than simply leaving investors uncertain about the future.
