✨ SEVEN YEARS (Calypso and Odysseus)
Tali Birenberg | Original Song
Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and the unforgettable story of Calypso and Odysseus.
I first encountered this story while studying literature at university. I remember winning a copy of The Odyssey from my lecturer, reading it from beginning to end, and being deeply moved by Calypso’s story.
For seven years, she sheltered Odysseus on her island. She loved him, but his heart longed for Penelope and the home he had left behind.
That paradox stayed with me.
Can you truly love someone who was never entirely yours? Can a heart belong to two women? And how do you let go when you know your time together has come to an end?
Years later, those questions became a song.
Seven Years is my musical interpretation of Calypso’s love, longing, and eventual farewell, blending classical influences with nostalgic 1980s pop.
🎵 LYRICS — SEVEN YEARS
[Verse 1]
I held you close when hope was gone,
I watched you sleep until the dawn.
I gave you shelter, gave my heart,
But you were hers right from the start.
I knew the sea would call your name,
I knew our love could never stay.
Yet every night beneath the stars,
I dreamed that you were truly ours.
[Pre-Chorus]
But in your dreams, across the sea,
There was a world that wasn’t me.
And somewhere deep, I always knew,
The sea would come to claim you too.
[Chorus]
Seven years…
Seven years is what we had.
Seven years…
Seven years of good and bad.
Was I holding on to you,
To a dream that couldn’t come true?
Seven years…
The worst of all my fears.
I still feel you everywhere.
[Male Echo]
I did love you…
I loved her too…
[Verse 2]
The rain, the pain, the memories stay,
They sit beside me night and day.
I knew the one I loved would leave,
But still I chose to believe.
I never asked you to forget
The life you lived before we met.
But every time you held me tight,
Did you love me through the night?
[Pre-Chorus]
But in your dreams, across the sea,
There was a world that wasn’t me.
And somewhere deep, I always knew,
The sea would come to claim you too.
[Chorus]
Seven years…
Seven years is what we had.
Seven years…
Seven years of good and bad.
Was I holding on to you,
To a dream that couldn’t come true?
Seven years…
The worst of all my fears.
I still feel you everywhere.
[Bridge – Dialogue]
Calypso: No, you were never truly mine.
Odysseus: I did love you for a time.
Calypso: Was it love or an illusion?
Odysseus: One was home, and one my inspiration.
[Final Chorus]
Seven years…
Seven years is what we had.
Seven years…
Seven years of good and bad.
Was I holding on to you,
To a dream that couldn’t come true?
Seven years…
The worst of all my fears.
I still feel you everywhere.
[Outro]
I did love you…
I loved her too…
