🔥 POWER SYSTEMS PART 3 — THERMAL POWER PLANT | COMPLETE LAYOUT & WORKING
In Power Systems Part 3, we begin our detailed study of the Thermal Power Plant.
Before studying individual components such as the boiler, steam turbine, condenser, cooling tower and feedwater system, it is important to understand the complete plant as one integrated system.
In this video, we follow the complete journey:
Coal → Heat → Steam → Turbine → Generator → Electricity → Grid
and understand how the different systems work together.
📚 IN THIS VIDEO
🔥 WHAT IS A THERMAL POWER PLANT?
Definition and basic concept
Why thermal energy is used for power generation
Chemical → Thermal → Mechanical → Electrical energy conversion
Role of the prime mover and generator
⚙️ COMPLETE THERMAL POWER PLANT LAYOUT
We understand the major sections of the plant:
Coal Handling System
Pulverizer
Boiler & Furnace
Superheater
Reheater
Steam Turbine
Generator
Condenser
Feedwater Pump
Economizer
Cooling Tower
Step-Up Transformer
Switchyard
Transmission Grid
🔥 COMPLETE WORKING
1️⃣ Coal → Combustion
Coal is handled, pulverized and supplied to the furnace with combustion air.
2️⃣ Combustion → Heat
Coal burns in the furnace and releases thermal energy.
3️⃣ Heat → Steam
Heat is transferred to water in the boiler to produce steam.
4️⃣ Steam → Mechanical Energy
High-pressure steam expands through the turbine and rotates the turbine shaft.
5️⃣ Mechanical → Electrical Energy
The turbine drives the generator, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
6️⃣ Electricity → Grid
Generated electricity passes through the step-up transformer and switchyard before entering the transmission grid.
💧 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TURBINE?
The exhaust steam from the turbine enters the condenser.
Turbine → Condenser → Feedwater Pump → Economizer → Boiler
The condensed water is returned to the cycle and reused.
🌬️ COOLING SYSTEM
We also understand the basic role of the cooling tower:
Cooling Tower → Cooling Water → Condenser → Heated Cooling Water → Cooling Tower
The cooling tower rejects heat from the circulating cooling water.
🔄 FOUR IMPORTANT FLOWS
We introduce the major plant circuits:
🔹 Coal & Ash Flow
🔹 Air & Flue Gas Flow
🔹 Steam & Water Flow
🔹 Cooling Water Flow
Along with the Electrical Power Flow from generator to grid.
