Tekken 3 (1998) by Namco is arguably one of the most influential 1v1 fighting games ever created and one of the titles that truly established Tekken as a giant of the genre. The original arcade version appeared in 1997, while the PlayStation port followed in 1998, and it was that home version that introduced the game to an enormous number of players.
Musically, graphically and, most importantly, in terms of gameplay, Tekken 3 became a benchmark for 3D fighting games. Even today I have to admit that it does not look bad at all. Of course, the low-resolution textures and polygonal models reveal its age, but the animation is still smooth, attacks have good impact and every fighter has a distinctive style. For a PlayStation game from the late 1990s, it remains surprisingly pleasant to watch.
The biggest strength is obviously the combat system. Tekken had already built its identity around assigning attacks to the fighter's limbs, but Tekken 3 made everything feel faster and more refined. Sidestepping became much more important, movement felt less stiff, juggling opponents opened the door to long combinations, and the huge number of moves was genuinely impressive for the time. A beginner could still have fun by learning a few simple strings, while someone willing to spend dozens of hours with one character could discover throws, counters, launchers and much more complicated combinations.
The roster also helped define the future of the series. Jin Kazama, Hwoarang, Eddy Gordo, Ling Xiaoyu and Bryan Fury all made their debuts here, joining established fighters such as Paul Phoenix, Lei Wulong and Nina Williams. Many of them became permanent faces of Tekken, which says a lot about how important this installment was for the identity of the franchise.
The PlayStation version was also packed with content. Apart from the standard fighting modes, there were additional attractions such as Tekken Force, where you moved through stages beating groups of enemies, and the ridiculous but entertaining Tekken Ball mode. Unlockable characters and endings gave players another reason to keep returning.
Personally, however, there was never much doubt about who I wanted to use. Paul Phoenix and his completely absurd haircut are so iconic that I decided his fist would be the one to win the King of Iron Fist Tournament for me. Paul is powerful, straightforward and incredibly satisfying to play, especially when one perfectly timed hit removes a frightening amount of the opponent's health.
Tekken 3 is also one of the last entries where, in my opinion, Paul was treated almost entirely as a serious fighter rather than increasingly being used as comic relief. He was always exaggerated, of course, but here he still feels like a genuine martial arts monster and a believable contender for the tournament rather than primarily a joke character. I definitely prefer this version of him.
The soundtrack deserves praise as well. It has that unmistakable late-90s mixture of electronic and arcade-style music that suits the game perfectly. Each arena has its own identity, and together with the sound effects and announcer it creates an atmosphere that immediately takes me back to the PlayStation era.
There is a reason Tekken 3 is still mentioned whenever people talk about the greatest fighting games of its generation. It took almost everything the first two games had established and polished it into a faster, richer and much more confident package. It helped turn Tekken from a successful fighting series into one of the defining brands of the PlayStation era.
A decisive king of its time and still extremely enjoyable today. And yes, if I have to win the Iron Fist Tournament, I am doing it with Paul and that ridiculous tower of hair.
