Somewhere between two ports, a thousand miles from the nearest hospital, a crew member dies. There is no ambulance. There is no next of kin waiting at the gangway. And the ship — carrying a cargo worth more than the vessel itself, on a schedule measured in hours — does not turn around.
This is what actually happens next.
We go inside the procedure almost nobody outside the merchant navy has ever seen: the ship's hospital that doubles as something else entirely, the freezer that is not a freezer, the paperwork a captain fills out at 3 a.m., the radio call to a company office in another time zone, and the days or weeks the remaining crew keep working the same watches with an empty chair in the mess.
We also look at why the ship keeps sailing. It isn't cruelty. It's a chain of decisions involving flag states, insurance, port authorities in countries the ship may not be allowed to enter, and the simple physics of a vessel that cannot stop.
For the men and women who spend nine months at a time at sea, this is one of the quiet realities of the job — the one that never makes it into the recruitment brochure.

In this video: what happens when a sailor dies at sea, burial at sea and modern maritime practice, how a captain handles a death on board, why cargo ships don't divert, life and death in the merchant navy, and what the rest of the crew goes through for the remainder of the contract.
This video is a documentary account of established maritime practice. Names and specific voyages are composites; no single vessel or crew is depicted.
