This live stream is a panel regrouping acclaimed designers to discuss applied ethics to wargaming. Based on their experience as designers and players, guests will discuss if wargames should depict civilian victimization, and if so, how? The panel: Brian Train: China's War, Colonial Twilight, Shining Path Javier Romero: Spanish Civil War, Chechen War, Soviet Fallout John Poniske: Heart & Minds, Maori Wars, Vendée 1793 Tomislav Čipčić: Brotherhood & Unity This video covers a sensitive ethical topic of wargame design; viewer discretion is advised. Timestamps: Introducing the panel - 02:04 Anecdotes about wargame outrage - 08:15 Part 1 - Should Civilian Victimization be depicted? - 23:43 Part 2 - How to depict Civilian Victimization ? - 01:04:20 John Poniske enters the chat room ! - 01:10:32 Conclusion - 01:54:58 Transcription of the statement in intro that is barely hearable because of my poor wifi: For this first episode of Wargame Ethics, I invited a panel of designers to talk about the depiction of civilian victimization in wargames. And there is already a flaw in that approach, designers, talking among themselves about the ethics of what THEY do with no one carrying the voice of people directly impacted. I recognize this limit and would like to be clear on the fact that I would be more than happy to extend this discussion to others in a follow-up episode if I get a request for it. Special thanks to Stephen Rangazas.
