Last year, we lost the anchor of our family - Nellie Chafa. This was a death that shattered not only my family’s hearts, but the hearts of so many other people whose lives she had touched.
I know people say this about their loved ones all the time, but this woman was truly the kindest, warmest and funniest person I had ever known. She was a role model to everyone who knew her.
Before moving to Scotland, from when I was a small baby until I was around four years old, my grandparents raised me. Whilst I have very little memory of this time because of how young I was, I know that I had an amazing, loving childhood living with them in Malawi. To the point that when I was moving to Scotland, I had a meltdown for days because I just wanted my ‘Agogo’.
I’m an adult now, and I hate that I got so wrapped up in my own life that I’d forget to message my grandmother back, even though she messaged me every single day. Or that I could go weeks without even saying so much as a hello.
Now that I’m 22, I’ve visited my home without my grandmother being there, and the absence in that house hit me like a ton of bricks.
It was amazing to spend time with my family and meet people I hadn’t seen since I was a small child. But ultimately, amongst all the laughs and the new memories we made, someone was missing.
All I really want is my Agogo again.
So, I don’t really know who is going to watch or read this. I’m only really posting these videos for my own kids to watch one day when I’m old and grey. But whoever is watching this (as cliche as it is)
Please appreciate your loved ones.
You never truly know when they won’t be here anymore. Message them back. Call them. Say hello, even when life gets busy. Because one day, you might give anything just to talk to them again.
