In February 2022, Ukraine had exactly one Bohdana — a single prototype of its first homegrown 155mm NATO-standard cannon. And the order was to destroy it, so it would not fall into Russian hands.
It was never destroyed. Instead, engineers dismantled it, evacuated it, and rebuilt it — and within months, that same prototype was firing at Snake Island from the Danube marshes, around 35 kilometres away, loaded by hand because it had no automatic loader yet.
In this video:
The February 2022 order: destroy the only Bohdana prototype before Russia captures it — and how it survived instead
Snake Island, June 2022: the Bohdana firing from land positions in the Danube marshes (not from a barge — the barge weapon was a Uragan rocket system), destroying Pantsir-S1 air defences and radars, ten precision strikes on June 27, and the Russian evacuation on June 30
The cannon itself: 155mm NATO-standard, 52-calibre barrel, 42 km range (60 km with rocket-assisted / Excalibur rounds), 5 crew, 20 rounds on board, 28 tons, 80 km/h, shoot-and-scoot
The production climb: around 6 systems a month in 2023, nearly 20 a month by October 2024 after Denmark funded the first 18 units, and 20+ a month in 2025, with some sources reporting up to 30–36 in a single month
The scale by October 2025: domestic 155mm systems making up around 40% of frontline artillery
The final twist: in March 2026, a Polish-Ukrainian joint venture (PK Mil SA) began producing the Bohdana in Poland — the first foreign production of the cannon
A note on the numbers: production figures vary by source (20+ to 30+ per month in 2025), and all agree on the direction — sharply up. The Snake Island firing position was on land in the Danube marshes, roughly 35–40 km from the island.
