The Word of Mouth Big Band made their touring debut with two consecutive dates at Los Angeles's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Both days were captured by audience members, and while I have listened more to January 10 for its sound quality, 11 features these exciting versions of "Fannie Mae."
Four minutes into the performance, Jaco plays a bass solo, uncommon for the song, followed by the horn theme, verse, and outro. And then — probably as a response to the enthusiastic crowd — they restart the song, but instead of "Fannie Mae," Jaco sings B. B. King's "Why I Sing the Blues" — but only for the first verse, which is why I don't consider this a proper rendition like I did initially; it's not uncommon to quote other blues songs, and I've also heard Jaco do this with "Kansas City."
If you counted these back-to-back renditions as one, it still wouldn't rival the 19-minute version from the Word of Mouth's April 13, 1981, sophomore concert, which I'm yet to hear. The song got shorter as the tour went on, culminating in Yokohama Stadium's 2½-minute version used for Warner Bros.'s Twins II (Aurex Jazz Festival '82) and Invitation live albums. I've been building a chronology based on newspaper advertisements, tapes, among other sources, which dates the next performance to January 13 at Park West in Chicago, Illinois. I don't have a tape of this, but if you do, please contact me!
