The Lexus IS 200 (XE10) was the first generation of the IS series, produced from 1998 to 2005. It was developed as a compact executive sports sedan aimed directly at rivals like the BMW 3 Series (E36/E46) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
🛠 Development & Background
Internally coded XE10, it was engineered in Japan by Toyota, Lexus’ parent company.
The design was led by Toyota’s European design studio (ED – Europe Design Development) with a strong focus on appealing to younger European buyers.
In Japan, the car was sold as the Toyota Altezza, which won the 1998–1999 Japan Car of the Year award.
The platform featured a front-engine, rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout, emphasizing balanced handling and sporty driving dynamics.
Simple Drive tests cars and lets you enjoy the sound and experience of the car.
