Harrison Ford's most iconic characters are Han Solo, Indiana Jones and Rick Deckard — three anti-heroes who became defining characters for an entire generation.
But when Ford returned to these characters decades later in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Blade Runner 2049, something had changed. He had been transformed into the absent father, attempting to reconnect with an estranged child and make amends for the past.
So what happened to Harrison Ford's anti-heroes? Was this simply the natural progression of characters who had aged alongside their audience? Or were these films representative of their aging writers a very different cultural landscape?
In this video, I look at Han Solo, Indiana Jones and Rick Deckard, and examine the similarities between their original characterisations and their later appearances. Was Harrison Ford doomed to become Hollywood's prodigal father?
