Sahrudaya Silk kendra is started in 1989 as part of women empowerment project of Welfare services Ernakulam in Angamaly chambanoor. Sahrudaya Silk Kendra is has been in the field for three decades, the main aim of the project was to empower women and train them for Sericulture.The reeling unit here can operate nearly 100kg of cocoons. Apart from that, the place also has a twisting unit and semi automatic powerloom units. Because of technical issues and the lack of supply of cocoons, the reeling unit has been suspended for the time being. Sahrudaya Silk Kendra is however able to maintain its quality of work and has been certified under the ministry of textiles for 100% pure silk textiles. currently, there are 10 staff members here who manufacture plain silk, fabri, tusser silk, raw silk. Sahrudaya's head office at Ponnurunni has different units to embed silk seeds, a reeling unit for extracting silk threads from cocoons, a unit for making silk cloth etc. All these units use cocoons bought directly from the cultivators.
