Thai companies applied to invest a record ฿1.9 trillion (about $60 billion) in 2025, yet the economy grew about 2%.
Then, in September 2026, the government paused 166 data-centre projects. Why did the star of Southeast Asia stop catching up?
Thailand did not crash. It stalled. We look at three things that broke at once: a shrinking workforce, households still paying off a decade of debt, and record investment pledges that create very few jobs. Sources: Thailand Board of Investment, World Bank, IMF, Bank of Thailand, BIS, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thailand Development Research Institute (via The Nation).
HOW THE KEY NUMBERS WERE BUILT
1.9 trillion baht = Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) investment applications in 2025 (1,876,653 million baht, about $60.2 billion). Applications are pledges, not money received.
2025 growth of 2.4% = World Bank WDI (real GDP). The IMF Article IV figure is 2.1%.
Average growth 2017-2025 of 1.8% (Vietnam 6.2%, Philippines 4.3%) is our calculation from World Bank and IMF data. It includes 2020 (-6.1%).
Digital share of BOI applications, 39.8% in 2025 and 85.9% in Q1 2026 (75.7% in H1 2026), is our calculation from BOI releases. BOI describes digital projects as "mostly data centers".
Net FDI inflows 2016-2024 (Thailand $79 billion, Vietnam $146 billion) is our calculation from World Bank WDI.
Potential growth of 2.7% is a Bank of Thailand assistant governor's estimate, reported by Khaosod, September 2026. We could not open a Bank of Thailand primary document.
The 50 jobs per 100 MW data centre is a Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) estimate, reported by The Nation. Google (4,200 construction workers a year) and BOI (82,000+ jobs across all sectors, H1 2026 approvals) disagree on jobs; both are shown.
The IMF figures in the video are from the April 2026 forecast.
