Every autumn, a carriage took Mrs. J. Pierpont Morgan to the pier. Her husband had just come home from Europe. For forty-eight years, Frances Tracy Morgan was married to the most powerful banker in America. She raised his four children, hosted his dinners, and kept a diary in which she once wrote six words about another woman, and then never wrote that name again. Her husband built a marble library to keep the things he loved. She lived in the house next door.
