At 1:29 a.m. on March 26, 2024, a container ship with no power drifted into one pier of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Thirty seconds later, half a mile of highway was in the river.
How can one ship, moving about as fast as a jogger, bring down an entire bridge? We rebuilt the night in 3D to show the three things that decided it: the mass of the ship, the shape of the bridge, and the age of its protection.
0:00 One ship, one pier, thirty seconds
1:55 Four minutes in the dark
3:07 Why the whole truss fell
4:48 Protection built for the 1970s
7:36 One loose wire, and the new bridge
