Japanese music spans more than a thousand years of cultural exchange, artistic transformation, and musical innovation. From the solemn sounds of imperial court music to the expressive rhythms of shamisen, the meditative breath of shakuhachi, and the experimental compositions of Ryuichi Sakamoto, its history reveals many different dimensions of Japanese culture.
In this video, we explore the development of Japanese music from ancient times to the present day.
We begin with gagaku, kagura, Buddhist shōmyō chanting, and biwa traditions. We then explore medieval performance arts, including Heike biwa, Noh theatre, and shakuhachi music, before moving into the vibrant musical culture of the Edo period, with shamisen, koto, jōruri, and folk songs.
The Meiji Restoration introduced Western music education and composition techniques, paving the way for modern Japanese composers such as Rentarō Taki and Kōsaku Yamada. In the twentieth century, Tōru Takemitsu explored new relationships between traditional Japanese instruments and the Western orchestra. Later developments included enka, City Pop, film scores, anime music, contemporary hōgaku, taiko drumming, and electronic music.
Through representative musical traditions and composers, this documentary examines how Japanese music absorbed influences from across East Asia and the West while developing distinctive artistic forms and aesthetics.
