Discord:   / discord   La Marseillaise is the national anthem of France and one of the most famous revolutionary songs in history. It was composed in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle during the French Revolution, originally under the title Chant de guerre pour l’armée du Rhin (“War Song for the Army of the Rhine”). Its passionate call to arms, powerful melody, and themes of liberty, resistance, and defense of the homeland quickly made it a symbol of the Revolution. During the 19th century, La Marseillaise also became an important song of the emerging workers’ movement. Its revolutionary language and association with popular struggle made it easy for workers and socialist activists to adopt and reinterpret. It was sung at demonstrations, political meetings, and revolutionary uprisings, becoming part of the broader musical tradition of the European labor movement and a symbol of resistance against oppression and political repression. The Deutsche Arbeiter-Marseillaise was written by Jacob Audorf in 1864 for the General German Workers’ Association (ADAV), using the melody of the Marseillaise.
