Do you need lots of detailed hatching to create a great pen and watercolor illustration?
Absolutely not.
In Episode 6 of *Bring Your Ink Drawings to Life*, we are simplifying our ink drawings and giving watercolor more room to describe the form.
I will show you a highly detailed pen-and-ink portrait of an older man to demonstrate what extensive hatching can accomplish, but then we will go in the opposite direction.
For beginners, using fewer hatch marks can make learning pen and watercolor much more approachable. We will use simple ink drawings, watercolor washes, and gradually darker values to create form without relying on hundreds of pen strokes.
In this video, you will learn:
• Why beginners do not need lots of hatching
• How watercolor can describe form and shadow
• When to let the pen stop and the watercolor begin
• How to build watercolor values gradually
• How simple ink drawings encourage experimentation
Grab a waterproof pen, a few small pieces of watercolor paper, and your watercolor palette, and come experiment with me.
God has given us creativity for a purpose. We do not have to make every drawing perfect. We can enjoy learning, developing our abilities, and being faithful with the gifts He has given us.
Keep creating.
God bless.
