Florida’s giant Burmese pythons have spent decades reshaping the Everglades—but scientists are finally documenting something unexpected: native predators are fighting back. This video follows evidence showing alligators killing young pythons, cottonmouths swallowing them, and bobcats raiding python nests and destroying entire clutches of eggs. In one study, five of nineteen tracked juvenile pythons were eaten by alligators. But the reversal isn’t as simple as it looks. Adult pythons can still kill and swallow alligators, and decades of hunting and removal have failed to eliminate the invasion. Native predators may be applying more pressure than scientists realized, but nobody yet knows whether that pressure is strong enough to slow the population on a meaningful scale. The Everglades may be fighting back—but the outcome is still unresolved.
