Before getting into the conversation, Philip Sutcliffe wanted to recognise the people who help him keep everything moving behind the scenes.
He would particularly like to thank his daughter Rebecca, who works closely with him and supports him day to day in his role as a Dublin City councillor. She is also secretary of Crumlin Boxing Club, helping with the work that goes into keeping the club running and supporting the wider community around it.
Philip is a Dublin City councillor, but boxing and community work have been central to his life for decades. For him, Crumlin Boxing Club has never just been about producing fighters. It has been a place where young people can find discipline, confidence, structure and somewhere to belong. He speaks openly about helping families, working with young people who may be heading down the wrong path, and the volunteers who continue to give their time to the club.
That experience shapes much of this conversation.
Philip discusses immigration, Irish identity, housing, the cost of living, pressure on public services, government accountability, emigration and the kind of Ireland being left for the next generation.
At its heart, this is a conversation about how Ireland is changing and how those changes are being felt on the ground. Housing pressure, rising living costs, stretched services, emigration and concerns about the country’s future are not abstract talking points for many people. They are part of everyday life across Ireland, affecting people from all walks of life.
