It had no name. At least, none that remained in the archives of those who stumbled upon it. The fortress stood like an obsidian monolith, its silhouette cutting through the choking haze of a world long forsaken. The first explorers to set foot upon its cold, metallic skin found no doors, no obvious means of entry—only a hushed, unbroken silence that pressed against the mind like a whisper from something just beyond the veil of comprehension.
Those who ventured too close often spoke of a low resonance, a sound not heard, but felt—a pulse buried beneath the surface of perception, like the breath of something colossal slumbering in the deep. Some dismissed it as the wind against the fortress walls. Others, those who lingered too long, swore the sound followed them, even in their dreams.
Decades passed, then centuries. The fortress did not decay. It did not rust or crumble like the ruins of forgotten civilizations. It simply remained, a structure outside of time, untouched by entropy.
And yet, the lights—those dim, intermittent glows—would shift. Flicker. Change patterns in ways that no known logic could explain. Some believed it to be an automated system, remnants of an abandoned outpost. Others whispered of something else. A pattern in the signals. A presence within.
The last recorded expedition was led by Commander Voss, a man who had spent his career unraveling the mysteries of dead worlds. He and his team arrived in the thick of a solar storm, their ship forced to land kilometers from the site due to the electromagnetic interference emanating from the fortress itself. Voss noted in his logs that even from that distance, the air around the structure felt different. Charged. Heavy with a static that clung to the skin and sent shivers through the bones.
On the second day, one of the engineers discovered what they believed to be an entrance—an almost imperceptible seam in the lower walls, revealed only when the smog parted for a fleeting moment. But when they returned with their tools, it was gone. Or perhaps, it had never been there at all.
By the fourth day, three members of the team had disappeared. Their beacons remained active, yet no trace of them could be found. The remaining crew reported distorted transmissions, voices speaking in fractured, looping phrases that did not belong to the missing. A language that shifted in ways the mind struggled to process.
On the final recorded transmission, Commander Voss spoke only a single phrase before static consumed the signal entirely. A phrase that, when analyzed, was found to repeat in an almost imperceptible pulse within the fortress’s low hum:
"We were never meant to wake it."
No further expeditions were authorized. The fortress remained, untouched and unchallenged. And yet, on nights when the fog grew thick and the wind carried the scent of frozen dust across the plains, distant lights could still be seen pulsing within its walls. A pattern. A rhythm.
A signal awaiting a response.
