Modern ancient-DNA research has revealed something even more surprising: the remains did not all come from a single group or a single event. Researchers identified genetically distinct groups, with some remains dating to around 800 CE, while another group dates to roughly 1,000 years later. One individual also showed Southeast Asian-related ancestry. So the real story of Roopkund may be far more complicated than the legend of a single catastrophe.
