These shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. The shabads convey a deep message of truth and are sung with heartfelt devotion. They express the intense longing of the soul for union with the Lord. These songs of devotion are prayers that inspire the true seeker to turn inwards to contact the ultimate Truth – the inner divine music that reverberates within every being.
English Translation:
I sacrifice myself, I sacrifice myself entirely.
I sacrifice a hundred times, a million times.
My Beloved’s beautiful form
always remains before my eyes.
Chaturdas does not forget even for a moment;
every single moment, I bow in devotion.
With every breath, I quietly remember
my Beloved within.
Other than the Beloved, in this world all relationships are false.
Inside and out, I see my Beloved;
I am dyed in my Beloved’s love.
Chaturdas dedicates his heart and soul
to his dear Beloved.
If I indulge in self-love,
my Beloved does not speak a word.
If I offer my soul and my faith as a sacrifice,
he unveils his face.
My I-ness conceals Him;
He keeps hidden behind this I-ness.
Says Chaturdas: The Friend is inside,
but the fool searches for Him outside.
Those who love their life dearly,
how do they know the value of the Friend?
If you do not sacrifice your life to your Friend,
death will take it away one day.
She held the unbaked earthen pot for the sake
of her love* – praises to her a thousand times.
Chaturdas, it is arduous to tread the path,
difficult to reach the destination.
By surrendering your head, call yourself the headman
to enter the abode of the Beloved.
Unless you sacrifice your head, how can you have
a glimpse of Him?
In search of the Beloved, he** stepped onto
the gallows happily.
Says Chaturdas: Hold on to the unbaked earthen pot
and cross the river to reach the Beloved.
