In 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen was experimenting with cathode rays when he noticed something impossible to ignore: a nearby fluorescent screen began glowing even though his apparatus was covered with black cardboard. Something invisible was passing through the barrier. Röntgen began investigating the mysterious radiation, testing what it could penetrate and what it could reveal. During those experiments, he produced an extraordinary image showing the bones inside a human hand. This video explores the strange laboratory observation, the experiments that followed, and how Röntgen’s mysterious “X” rays opened an entirely new way of seeing inside the human body without surgery.
