*SCHOODIC HEAD TRAIL*
The namesake trail of the Schoodic Peninsula
Of the 4 trails that climb toward the peak of Schoodic Head, SCHOODIC HEAD TRAIL is the most moderate. ANVIL TRAIL & EAST TRAIL rise steeply on the eastern side of the peninsula, while BUCK COVE MOUNTAIN TRAIL meanders 3+ miles down the peninsula from Schoodic Woods Campground. If your only goal is to climb Schoodic Head, there is no "easy way." However the easiest way is this trail up AND down. Otherwise, it would best be used as a descent off Schoodic Head.
If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth?

Beginning at the summit, SCHOODIC HEAD TRAIL heads south along the flat top of Schoodic Head. First encountering the trailhead of EAST TRAIL, the path is fairly straightforward as it is comprised of fairly flat glacially scored granite. The next trailhead in the spray of trailheads atop Schoodic Head is the trail spur down to the top of Mountain Road, a one and a half lane broken stone road that climbs Schoodic Head.
At the top of Mountain Road is a loop with some parking on the shoulder for maybe 6 or so cars. If it's open the drive up can be as unsettling as the Mount Washington Auto Road in New Hampshire, despite being shorter. Halfway through the revolution on the turnaround circle is a break in the trees. This view of Mount Desert Island across the Mount Desert Narrows is a worthwhile short detour off of SCHOODIC HEAD TRAIL.
Back on the trail, it continues past the trailhead of ANVIL TRAIL, over stretches of bog boards and roots to another incredible view of MDI before beginning to descend. A wood staircase precedes a final flat stretch of terrain, before the trail drops steeply down varying steps and root covered ground.
The trail then becomes a dirt path as it passes moss covered granite, occasionally narrowing down slightly rocky sections. Crossing a small brook, it finishes through forest ending on Ranger Cabin Road which can bring you to Schoodic Loop Road via Alder Trail to the left or Mountain Road to the right.
I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome!
FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN...
the best times are had when planned properly.
Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia...
your hiking plan can include them as contingencies.
Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe...
cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park.
Remember: know your limits so you can push them,
and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments...
(an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish).
