Despite her physical appearance, Rupa has a beautiful singing voice and is deeply religious. Rajeev (played by Shashi Kapoor), an engineer, hears her singing and falls in love with her without knowing about her disfigurement. He asks for her hand in marriage, and Rupa agrees, hoping he will accept her as she is. However, after the wedding, Rajeev discovers her scarred face and is devastated, leading to a complex relationship where he loves her voice and her unscarred side but rejects her disfigured side. The film explores themes of inner beauty, societal norms, and the struggle for acceptance.
