History of Varanasi and details about Baba Vishwanath Temple darshan.
🟠Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, is one of the oldest continuously living cities in the world dating back over 3,000 to 5000 years. It is deeply revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism as a profound spiritual, cultural, and educational hub.
Early artifacts: Digging near the Ganges river ghats has revealed pottery, tools, and structural remains dating back to around 1200 BCE (over 3,200 years ago).
🟠The city is mentioned as a prominent center of learning and civilization in ancient Hindu scriptures like the Rig Veda and the Atharvaveda, as well as in Buddhist and Jain texts from the 6th century BCE.
🟠Spiritual continuity - Hindus believe the city was founded by Lord Shiva over 5,000 years ago in mythology, making it the ultimate destination for salvation (moksha).
🟠The ancient name Kashi comes from the Sanskrit root kaś, meaning "to shine" or "to illuminate," designating it as the "City of Light". First recorded in the Rigveda, it denotes both an ancient kingdom and its spiritual center.
🟠Kashi: Derived from kaś, reflecting the divine light of Lord Shiva and spiritual liberation.
🟠Varanasi: The geographical name tied to the city's location between the Varuna (north) and Assi (south) rivers.
