In 399 BC, Socrates stood trial in front of about five hundred Athenians. He didn't shout or plead — he asked his accuser a few questions, until the accusation contradicted itself. Most people think liars "look away". A study across 58 countries found it's the most common belief about lying — and science says it's wrong. In a review of more than 200 experiments, people spotted lies and truths only 54% of the time. Watching the eyes doesn't work. Asking the right questions works much better. Here are 13 questions that make the truth easy to tell and a lie hard to hold together — each one with the exact words to use, Socrates' method behind it, and the modern research that supports it.
