In this episode of Political Naari, Nivedita take you to the heart of Delhi, where a major political confrontation unfolded between the opposition and the Election Commission. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, Mahua Moitra and hundreds of opposition MPs attempted to march from Parliament to the Election Commission to demand a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition has been raising serious allegations around “vote theft”, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and concerns over the functioning of the electoral system.
According to the report, the INDIA alliance had announced its march several days in advance. On October 6, the march began from Parliament with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Abhishek Banerjee, Selja Kumari and several other opposition leaders. The march was stopped near the NITI Aayog building, where multiple layers of barricades and a heavy police deployment blocked the routes leading towards the Election Commission.
Rahul Gandhi climbed a police barricade carrying the Tricolour and questioned why hundreds of elected Members of Parliament were being prevented from reaching the Election Commission. The situation escalated as several opposition MPs were detained. Rahul Gandhi later entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises, located close to the Election Commission office, where he continued his protest and spoke to journalists.
The report also examines the Election Commission’s response, including its statement that it became aware of the march through media and police reports and that no prior meeting had been requested. The Delhi Police cited the absence of permission for the proposed march. The following day, an FIR was reportedly registered against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders over their entry into the Akashvani Bhawan premises.
The political confrontation continued on October 7, when opposition leaders attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar. The buses carrying MPs were stopped, followed by a sit-in and further detentions. The episode unfolded alongside celebrations marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in constitutional office.
This report asks a larger democratic question: when opposition MPs seek to meet a constitutional institution such as the Election Commission, why does the situation escalate into barricades, detentions and FIRs instead of dialogue? If the allegations regarding electoral irregularities are incorrect, can they not be addressed through transparent data, documents and institutional responses?
