Ever noticed that the ocean’s menu has everything from sea urchin to jellyfish salad, but never the biggest, most famous predator in it? Humans will try nearly anything that swims. It is not that orcas are protected or too smart to eat — it is that the animal itself is built to be a warning, and the reasons run deeper than most people think. For much of the twentieth century orca meat really was food. Soviet factory ships killed 916 orcas in a single 1979 to 1980 season. Then scientists started testing tissue. This video follows the food pyramid from Charles Elton’s Bear Island expedition in 1921, through the vitamin A poisoning that struck Willem Barentsz’s crew in 1596, to Søren Jensen’s 1966 discovery of PCBs in Sweden. It covers biomagnification, mercury and the Minamata disaster, the Yusho rice oil poisoning, and what researchers found in seal-eating orcas. It also looks at Haida and Tlingit beliefs about killer whales, orca culture, menopause, and the rescue of an orphan named Springer. You’re standing at the top of the same pyramid, and the same chemicals are already in you. The video is educational and not medical or dietary advice. Topics covered: Why orcas are apex predators Why you can’t farm an orca When humans really hunted orcas Northwest Coast beliefs about orcas Vitamin A and polar bear liver PCBs and biomagnification Mercury and the Minamata disaster Orca intelligence, culture and menopause The rescue of Springer What orcas reveal about us #OrcaFacts #KillerWhales #OceanScience #FoodChain
