In April 2026, Rio de Janeiro hosted our first-ever Global Community Land Trust Peer Exchange, bringing together favela leaders, activists and CLT practitioners from 12 countries — Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Kenya, Paraguay, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States — for five days to explore how collective land ownership can advance racial, social and gender justice. The event included panel discussions, roundtables and visits to historic communities alongside local leaders in Rio de Janeiro, including Providência, Vila Autódromo, Cantagalo and Shangri-lá. Over the course of the week, we heard stories of resistance to forced eviction and the perspectives of leaders who are building a growing global movement for housing rights, memory and community empowerment. What emerged went beyond shared knowledge: generating changes in practice, new relationships and a set of commitments that participants carried home. This short documentary provides a sense of the powerful exchange. The exchange took place from April 12-16, 2026 and was organized by the Favela CLT Project/Catalytic Communities, Rondo Community Land Trust, the International Center for CLTs and the Canadian Network of CLTs, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
