Jaguar vs Caiman: The River's Biggest Hunter Still Pays | FULL EPISODE | Wildlife Documentary
Jaguar vs Caiman: The River's Biggest Hunter Still Pays opens at the edge of the flooded Amazon forest, where a female jaguar finds a black caiman nest and stays more than an hour, eating the eggs. An egg cannot bite back. She comes back later that day, and again the next morning.
The film follows the black caiman, considered the largest predator in the Amazon Basin, through the season when the water falls and its world shrinks to its edges. Black caimans measured in the wild in the Amazon reach thirteen feet, yet nearly a third of black caiman nests are raided for their eggs. Almost half of what jaguars in the flooded forest eat is caiman, but most of it is the smaller species — the giant itself pays with its life only once in a long while. Far to the south, in the Pantanal, one giant otter in the water turns back two young jaguars. Along the shrinking channels, otter families hold their own stretches of water, and a whole family sends a jaguar running from beside its den. In the drying pools, giant otters hunt young caimans, and when a caiman is near, the family calls. Then, on a vast lake in the central Amazon, four giant otters swim toward a big black caiman.
If the black caiman is the biggest hunter in the Amazon's waters, who still comes for it — and what does it pay?
Epic Moments:• A female jaguar at a black caiman nest in the flooded forest, eating the eggs for more than an hour.• A black caiman more than twelve feet long on a mat of floating plants, with a jaguar's paw prints all around it.• Six hundred yards from the water, a smaller caiman's nest of leaves, the prints of two jaguars, and scattered eggshells.• One giant otter in the Pantanal meeting two young jaguar sisters at the waterline until they back off.• Two giant otter families facing each other across a shrinking channel.• A giant otter family rushing up out of the water, screaming, until a young jaguar turns and runs.• In a drying pool, a young caiman changing jaws between giant otters.• Four giant otters closing in on a big black caiman lying half-submerged near the bank.
