Mounting gravel tires on ever widening gravel wheel sets like the Zipp 303 XPLR SW can quickly frustrate even seasoned mechanics. Is it the tire or the wheel or both that make it so difficult? Silca decide they could solve that problem and a few others that incumbent brands left to the consumer to fight with, largely because solving the mounting problem and others, like seating the tires after we wrestle them on, bead creep, weight, etc means additional cost in both R&D and materials that mainstream tire brands weren't willing to take on. But Silca? They say they didn't care if it added $3 or $4 or $5 to the cost of the tire. They cared that their investment of money and time to enter the tire market made gravel and road tires better. So, did they make a truly better tire? Is it, as they promise, hand mountable, easy to seat with a standard floor pump or even a tiny electric pump, and true the size on the sidewall? Well, yes to all of that. It's my favorite tire yet for a gravel bike. I used them this week at The Rad in Trinidad, CO and I plan to use them next year at Unbound Gravel 2027.
