​Devil’s Trap: Survive at All Costs

Greetings to you all! I invite your attention to a film about the dramatic events of the past and one of the most severe trials in human history. Today, we travel to the Swiss Alps, to the picturesque yet harsh Schöllenen Gorge, to touch upon the pages of a great and tragic campaign. Historical Route and the Schöllenen Gorge: It was right here, among the sheer cliffs and the roaring torrent of the Reuss River, that the events of the legendary Alpine crossing by the Russian army under the command of Alexander Suvorov unfolded in 1799. The nature of these places strikes one with its pristine beauty and inaccessibility. The Urnerloch Tunnel: A unique witness to those times is a small tunnel about 64 meters long, hewn into the rock by hand back in 1707. During the campaign, this narrow space became a strategic trap: the retreating French forces entrenched themselves at the exit and blew up the bridge, but Russian soldiers, at the cost of incredible effort, managed to break through under heavy fire. The Legend of the Devil’s Bridge: The crossing itself bears an intriguing name — the Devil’s Bridge. According to ancient lore, local residents long struggled to build a bridge across the turbulent mountain torrent until they made a bargain with dark forces. Although the bridge was built, the peasants outwitted the builder, and ever since, this place has been shrouded in numerous legends. The Harsh Realities of the Crossing: Movement here in those years bordered on a miracle. The surrounding precipices and icy water left no chances in the event of a mistake, and the memory of the soldiers' courage is immortalized by a giant cross hewn directly into the cliff not far from the bridge. In this video, we will walk through that very historic Urnerloch tunnel, explore the surroundings of the Devil’s Bridge, and witness with our own eyes the sites of former military glory.
