UK FOSSILS - Abbey Wood!!! - with Leon Hills - LEON CREATOR

A look at all the fossils I have sorted so far!! Several years ago, I was lucky enough to join some lovely, friendly experts on a dig to the fossil layer at Abbey wood. The layer is deep under ground so an excavator was brought to the site. A group of us sieved material to get rid of larger stones etc. I collected a large tub of the sieved matrix & have been sorting it, on & off, ever since!! It is so rich in tiny fossils that it will still take many days to carefully pick through it all. I don't want to miss anything important! An agreement when collecting the material, was that any mammal remains found in it, must be handed in for analysis. This is because new species of extinct small mammals have been found at this site & any bones can form crucial 'jigsaw' pieces when trying to reconstruct their complete skeletons at the Natural History Museum. I haven't found a single rodent incisor yet (but that's not to say there aren't any still in the tub!) - I will keep sorting & when I'm done, anything I'm not sure about can be handed back & checked - if it's from anything other than a mammal, I can keep it!! We went back to one of the experts houses (I won't name him just in case he doesn't want to be named!) after the dig & his home is even more like a museum than mine!!! He had a whole large room just filled with drawer after drawer of various fossil shark teeth from around the world - I will never see that many in one place ever again - amazing. I am so grateful to him & the rest of the group that I met that day, for allowing me to add Abbey Wood as another fossil location for my personal fossil collections & allowing me to collect so much in just a single day.
