Hace tiempo que vengo al taller" ("I've Been Coming to the Workshop for a While") belongs to the masterpiece La del manojo de rosas ("The Girl with the Bunch of Roses"), a highly demanding sainete lírico (lyric comedy) with music by the master composer Pablo Sorozábal, premiered in 1934.
The Plot: The storyline transports us to a picturesque square in traditional 1930s Madrid, where the destinies of a flower shop and a mechanic's workshop intertwine. The plot follows Ascensión, a young florist of unwavering convictions and humble pride, courted by Joaquín, a mechanic from the workshop. Joaquín, head over heels in love, conceals the fact that he actually belongs to a wealthy upper social class; he disguises himself as a simple laborer to win the florist’s heart for who he truly is, rather than for his fortune. When Ascensión uncovers the deception, the clash of pride, working-class dignity, and raw passion unleashes a vibrant duel of emotions that Sorozábal weaves together with absolute harmonic mastery.
An Interpretation with Soul: In this masterful recording, soprano Juani Díaz embodies the heroine Ascensión with regal pride and overwhelming sensitivity, elevating every single note with her unmistakable "sovereign voice." By her side, baritone José Antonio Peñas brings Joaquín to life with resounding power, while the magical hands of Olympia Ballesteros at the piano sustain this torrent of pure emotion, transforming traditional Spanish casticismo into a universal symphony.
A Personal and Exclusive Dedication: This is a personal and exclusive dedication that I, Juani Díaz, present with all my unconditional love and devout filial affection to my beloved father, Blas Díaz. He, the ultimate conoisseur, "taught us to love zarzuela and to understand that music is the universal and indestructible power that keeps our family empire united in Jódar [local]. This is for you, Dad, with all the soul of your daughter Juani!"
