A special trip over to Belfast to visit one of the most iconic grounds in the country — The Oval as Glentoran FC hosted Coleraine FC in the NIFL Premiership.
A real groundhopper’s favourite and one I’ve wanted to tick off for a long time.
I arrived early to meet lifelong Glentoran supporter Ricky, who kindly gave me a full tour of the ground ahead of kick-off. We explored the rich history of the club including historic trophies, famous European runs, and old photographs that really show the heritage of this place. I even got the chance to step onto the pitch!
One of the most fascinating parts of the visit was seeing the World War II bunker beneath the stadium, a reminder of when the ground was bombed during the war. Incredible history at every turn.
Then it was time for the football.
The game got off to a really unfortunate start as Coleraine FC suffered a serious injury, with one of their players sustaining what looked like a broken leg. A long stoppage followed and it understandably took the tempo out of the game.
The first half never really got going after that, but Coleraine made the most of their opportunity. A long ball forward was controlled brilliantly before being finished calmly, sending the travelling fans into delirium! 0-1.
Right on the stroke of half-time, things got even more dramatic as Coleraine were reduced to 10 men for a professional foul.
Half-time: 0-1.
Second half and Glentoran FC looked to take full advantage of the extra man. They piled on the pressure, with crosses constantly being delivered into the box.
It eventually paid off midway through the half when a header found the net! 1-1 and game on!
Then came the HUGE moment.
Glentoran were awarded a penalty the perfect chance to turn the game around. Up stepped Patrick Hoban…
SAVED! 😱
A massive opportunity missed.
Glentoran continued to push forward in search of a winner, but despite their pressure, Coleraine dug in with 10 men and held on for a hard-earned point.
Full-time: 1-1.
A game full of drama both on and off the pitch, in one of the most historic and unique stadiums in Northern Ireland.
