Matthew 11:28–30 is Jesus offering his own yoke in place of the one that is crushing people. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This follows a hard stretch. He has rebuked the towns that saw his works and did not repent. He has said that the Father has handed everything to him, and that no one knows the Father except the Son and those the Son chooses to reveal him to. Then he turns and invites. The authority and the invitation are the same moment. Come to me. Not to a system, not to a heavier rule set. To him. The weary and the burdened are the ones loaded down, and in this Gospel the load is the religious weight the teachers have put on people, the yoke they will not lift a finger to move. He offers rest. Rest is the first gift, before the new yoke. Then he does give a yoke. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. A yoke is what pairs an animal to the work. He is not offering escape from all obedience. He is offering his obedience instead of theirs. Learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart. The teachers are not. He is meek and lowly, so his yoke does not grind the way theirs does. You will find rest for your souls. That line is from Jeremiah 6:16, the old paths where you find rest. Jesus is saying he is that path. My yoke is easy and my burden is light. Easy means well-fitting, kind, not weightless. The burden is light because of who is carrying the other side of it. Rest and a yoke sit together. You come and get rest. You stay and learn him. The rest is not the end of following. It is what following him feels like compared with the load you came in under.
