Today I’m making this simple Thanksgiving door hanger, but along the way I’m going to show you three techniques you can use in all kinds of paper crafts: how to use the Big Bite to set grommets, how to finish a project that will be seen from both sides, and how to turn a simple paper piece into something functional with just a few finishing details.
If you own a Crop-A-Dile Big Bite but rarely reach for it because it feels awkward or frustrating to use, I especially wanted to share this project with you. I’ve found a way of working with mine that makes sense for me, and perhaps my technique will make the tool a little easier for you, too.
One thing I do differently is use a grommet with a separate backing circle. It isn’t the type of grommet originally intended for this tool, but I’ve found that the backing circle gives me a much nicer finish on the reverse side. Instead of being left with the rougher backside that can happen when a metal piece is set, the backing circle helps create a cleaner, more finished result—especially useful when both sides of the project will be visible.
We’ll also add lace and hanging trim and talk about those little finishing choices that help a simple paper project feel more complete and purposeful.
And although I’m making a Thanksgiving door hanger today, I hope you’ll look beyond the finished project itself. The idea can be repurposed and redesigned in other sizes and formats. A smaller version, for example, could become the starting point for a junk journal cover or another decorative journal element. You don’t have to recreate the project exactly—you can take the techniques, change the scale, and see where they lead.
Sometimes one paper craft gives us the beginning of several others.
In this video you’ll see:
How I use the Crop-A-Dile Big Bite to set grommets
Why I like using a grommet with a separate backing circle
How I finish a project that will be seen from both sides
Simple ways to add lace and hanging trim
Ideas for repurposing and redesigning the concept for junk journaling and other paper crafts
I hope this gives you a reason to pull out a tool you may not have been using and discover a gentler way to make it work for you.
Happy crafting - and Thankful for YOU!
