F-Zero was one of four first-party launch titles when the SNES hit store shelves in the US on August 23, 1991; the other three being Super Mario World, Pilotwings and Sim City. Gradius III from Konami was the sole third-party launch title. This "rad racer" was developed to showcase the Super Nintendo's breakthrough "Mode 7" graphical effects, which do all of the heavy lifting in this game as far as rotating, scaling and traversing the large texture maps that make up the tracks; giving the game a sense of speed through a psuedo-3D environment.
