Death Valley's salt floor at Badwater is the lowest point in North America, 282 feet below sea level, just 85 miles from the 14,505-foot summit of Mount Whitney, the highest US peak outside Alaska.
Under the salt lies more than 11,000 feet of sediment and salt before you reach rock. The whole region is still being pulled apart, the basin keeps sinking, and the mountains keep rising.
