Webinar Children's Rights Under Fire | Challenging the False Conflict with Parental Rights

How are parental rights arguments being used to undermine children's rights, and how can these narratives be challenged? On 29 October 2026, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA), in partnership with Amnesty International Kenya, convened the first webinar in its Rights Under Attack series, examining how claims of parental authority and protection are increasingly invoked to restrict children's access to information, education, healthcare and participation in decisions affecting their lives. Bringing together legal experts and children's rights advocates, the discussion explored the false conflict between children's rights and parental rights, the legal protections afforded to children under African and international human rights frameworks, and strategies for challenging narratives that undermine children's autonomy, evolving capacities and best interests. The webinar also marked the launch of the first legal analysis in ISLA's Rights Under Attack series, which examines how parental rights narratives are used to challenge established protections for children and explores legal approaches to safeguarding their rights.
