A camera spots a plant. A computer decides whether it belongs there. A laser aims at its growing point. All while a tractor moves through a field of crops. Carbon Robotics' LaserWeeder is already working on farms. But how does it tell a crop from a weed, what happens when it gets the decision wrong, and does the cost actually make sense? This Hidden Wins documentary goes beyond the demonstration: how the machinery works, what Cornell and Rutgers researchers found, why some weeds are harder to kill, and what one farm's economics can—and cannot—tell us. The university results discussed were reported in 2025. The cost comparison comes from a March 2024 Western Growers case study of an earlier machine and includes remaining hand labour. Manufacturer claims are identified separately. Demonstration footage includes US farms and clearly identified Australian material; it is not footage of the university experiments.
