In 1978 a builder outside Deming, New Mexico did one thing to a house that his whole framing crew thought was a waste of money. He bent it. His daughter still owns that house. She runs the air conditioning about six or seven weeks a year. Her neighbours, in newer and better insulated houses two hundred yards away, run theirs from May to October. Two words in that title need dealing with before anything else. No house cools itself for nothing. What a house built this way does is start every hot day from a lower number and hold it, so the machine barely runs and on many days does not run at all. And banned overstates it, so I am going to say plainly in the first three minutes that L-shaped houses are not banned anywhere in the United States. What is true is more interesting and considerably more useful to anybody who intends to build. In this video: what self-shading actually does, and the third effect of the bend that nobody mentions. Why the long axis runs east to west and why that single line on a drawing is worth more than any product you can buy. The move that goes against every article on this subject, which is that on the hottest days you shut the house rather than open it. The dogtrot house, and how the same knowledge got built by people with no money and then enclosed within two generations. Then the rule book. Setbacks, lot coverage, floor area ratio, street frontage, and the appraiser and the secondary mortgage market behind them. Nobody outlawed the shape. They wrote a rule book it cannot fit inside, and no single person can switch that off because no single person built it. Also the honest limits, including the climates where this does not carry a house and you will still want a machine. 📗 The Owner-Built Home. The link is on the channel description. Written for people who intend to actually build something. 💬 What does one month of cooling cost you where you live, and what shape is your house?
