【山王林道】陽だまりの紅葉と白樺の罠｜山王峠から光徳牧場へ下る晩秋の緊張感

In autumn (September through November), Japanese white birch trees disintegrate their mature, cone-like catkins to disperse seeds across the mountain wind. Along with the seeds, countless scale-like fragments (bract scales) that formed the cone fall to the ground. Swept by the wind, these fallen scales gather into thick drifts in the dips of the asphalt and along the edges of downhill curves. Riding over these accumulated birch scales creates an unexpectedly slick, ball-bearing-like surface—a subtle yet dangerous seasonal trap quite different from black ice.
