Join me for an immersive walk through Tobermory, the irresistible little capital of the Isle of Mull and one of the most instantly recognisable and purely joyful destinations in the whole of Scotland. Sitting around its perfectly sheltered natural harbour on the northeastern tip of the island, Tobermory is the kind of place that makes you smile the moment you set eyes on it — and the longer you spend here, the deeper and more genuine that smile becomes. 0:00 Oban to Isle of Mull Ferry 0:35 Tobermory Harbour 1:54 Tobermory Town 7:17 Tobermory Pier 9:21 Tobermory Town Continued 14:42 Tobermory Ferry Terminal We'll arrive at the harbour front and take a moment to simply drink it all in, because the famous painted buildings that line the waterfront are every bit as charming and vivid in real life as they appear in every photograph you have ever seen of them. Bold reds and yellows, deep blues and greens, warm pinks and crisp whites — each building painted in its own individual colour, the whole row reflected in the sheltered waters of the bay on a calm day in a scene so picturesque it borders on the theatrical. Behind the coloured frontages the wooded hills of Mull rise steeply, completing a picture that feels almost too perfect to be accidental. We'll wander the length of the harbour front at the pace that Tobermory demands — which is to say, very slowly and with frequent stops. The independent shops, galleries, and eateries that occupy the painted buildings are as individual and characterful as the frontages themselves, and browsing them is one of the great simple pleasures of any visit to Mull. The smell of the sea is constant, the sound of the water against the boats in the harbour a steady and deeply soothing backdrop to everything, and the whole waterfront has a rhythm and an ease to it that belongs entirely to island life. Up from the harbour the town climbs the hillside in a series of terraced streets that offer ever more spectacular views back across the bay and out toward the Sound of Mull, where the mainland mountains of Morven and Ardnamurchan rise magnificently on the far shore. The upper town has its own quieter charm — residential streets of painted cottages, a clock tower, the old distillery sitting solidly above the harbour producing the island's famous single malt in the same spot it has occupied since 1798. We'll find a viewpoint above the town where the whole of the bay spreads out below and the scale and beauty of the surrounding landscape fully announces itself. There is a magic to Tobermory that is difficult to define and impossible to manufacture — something to do with the colours and the water and the mountains and the particular quality of the light out here on the western edge of things. It gets into you quietly and stays there long after the ferry has carried you back to the mainland. Come and find out for yourself why this little harbour town on a Hebridean island has been capturing hearts for as long as anyone can remember.
