The state's first witness was supposed to walk the jury through the horror. Three minutes of cross and the story changed. Sgt. Anthony Portman is a Tampa Police Department supervisor. On June 23, 2024, he and six officers were stationed at the Truth 18 Lounge a few miles from where Charles Jones, known as Julio Foolio, would be killed before sunrise. When the 4:40 AM shots-fired call came in, Portman and his squad rolled to the Holiday Inn. He's here to walk the jury through what he saw. Brian Gonzalez is not going to let the state spend half an hour showing jurors a blood trail and call it evidence. Watch his cross. He's only on Portman for about three minutes, but pay close attention to what he's asking. He's not challenging a single photograph. He's asking what Tampa PD already knew before the call came in. Every police witness the state calls for the rest of this trial is going to be asked some version of the same question. Where was Tampa PD? What did they know? And why, if they were watching, didn't they stop this? The state wants this jury anchored on the horror. The defense just gave them something else to anchor on. --- WATCH WITH JUSTICE 0:00 to 3:35 - Portman is where the state wants him to be. Stationed at Truth 18 Lounge, three miles from where Foolio will be killed. Watch how the state sets up the contrast they'll come back to in closing. Nothing unusual at Truth 18 while he was there. 3:36 to 7:00 - The 4:40 AM call. Portman rolls toward the Holiday Inn. A silver Hyundai comes the other way, drives over the curb, barrels into the parking lot. Three civilians jump out screaming for help for their friend in another car. 7:01 to 11:40 - The friend is dead. Portman walks to the black Dodge Charger, looks inside, checks for a pulse on a man pinned between the seats. No breathing. No pulse. The state starts walking the jury through the photos. 11:41 to 22:26 - The blood trail. From the Charger across the sidewalk, through the glass doors, across the lobby, around the corner to the elevators, up into the hotel. The jury sits with every image. 22:27 to 28:58 - Two more victims found bleeding on the third floor. The hotel manager comes around the corner with towels trying to clean up before morning guests see. Portman stops him. The scene keeps expanding. 28:59 to 32:14 - Gonzalez stands up. Three minutes. No photograph challenged. Watch what he asks the state's first witness about what Tampa PD already knew before that 4:40 AM call came in. 32:15 to 33:43 - The state's redirect. Doherty tries to neutralize what just happened. Judge for yourself whether she succeeds. --- READ THE FULL ANALYSIS From the Desk of Justice: All Four of Them - justiceisaprocess.com/desk-2026-04-23-all-four-of-them COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage and hit the notification bell so you never miss testimony.
