SKYRIM IN UNITY — DEVLOG #3
This is the third development update for Skyrim in Unity, an unofficial fan project focused on running Skyrim Special Edition content through a Unity-based runtime.
WHAT'S NEW IN THIS VIDEO
• Grass rendering: Skyrim's original grass is now rendered in Unity.
• Day/night cycle: A functioning day and night cycle has been implemented, allowing time to progress and environmental lighting to change throughout the day.
• Original Skyrim fonts: The game's original fonts have been integrated.
These improvements focus primarily on the environment and visual presentation, building upon the gameplay and world-loading systems introduced in previous videos.
PLANNED FOR DEVLOG #4
• Swimming: Implementing player movement and interaction with water, allowing the character to swim instead of treating water as a purely visual element.
• World map: Implementing an in-game map system to help navigate Skyrim's world.
These are planned features and may change depending on development progress.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Skyrim in Unity is an unofficial fan project that aims to recreate the runtime functionality needed to play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition using Unity.
This is not a traditional remake. Instead of recreating Skyrim's existing content by hand, the project reads game data and assets directly from a clean, unmodified, up-to-date installation of Skyrim Special Edition, including the free Creation Club content bundled with the current version.
ORIGINAL GAME CONTENT
Whenever technically possible, the project reuses the original models, textures, animations, sounds, world geometry, cell and object placement data, and NPC and gameplay records.
REBUILDING THE ENGINE FUNCTIONALITY
The original Skyrim engine is not being transferred to Unity. Engine-side functionality must therefore be implemented or adapted, including rendering, physics, collision handling, player controls, animation playback, world loading, LOD, navigation, NPC AI, dialogue, quests, combat, scripting, and saving.
Some Unity-specific resources or data representations must be generated, but the guiding principle is to reuse existing Skyrim content wherever possible and build only what is necessary to make it work inside Unity.
CURRENT DEVELOPMENT
Development began with Riverwood, which can already be loaded and explored inside Unity.
The project currently includes:
• Loading Skyrim Special Edition world content into Unity
• First-person and third-person player movement
• Original Skyrim character animations
• Environmental collisions
• An evolving LOD system designed to reduce visible object popping
• Basic NPC behavior and daily routines
• Interior cell loading and loading screens
• Grass rendering
• Day/night cycle
• Original Skyrim fonts
The long-term goal is to reproduce the base Skyrim experience as faithfully as reasonably possible, while exploring improved world rendering, smoother LOD transitions, and native support for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The project remains experimental, and many essential gameplay systems are still incomplete.
DEVELOPMENT VIDEOS
These videos are straightforward records of real development progress, not heavily edited presentations.
New videos will be uploaded when meaningful functionality has been added or improved, showing what works, what remains incomplete, and what comes next.
INSTALLATION AND DISCLAIMER
The project is designed to use assets from the user's own legitimate, clean Skyrim Special Edition installation. Original game assets are not intended to be packaged or redistributed with the project. A compatible installation of Skyrim will be required.
This is an unofficial fan project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bethesda Game Studios, ZeniMax Media, or Unity Technologies.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, and their original content belong to their respective rights holders. This project does not claim ownership of them.
